Precipitated barium sulfate - Properties

Soluble in hot sulfite and concentrated sulfuric acid, insoluble in water, ethanol, general acids, and caustic solutions. Non combustible. Toxic sulfide fumes are generated by high-temperature decomposition.
Barite is the most common sulfate mineral rich in barium. Orthorhombic crystal system, the crystals are mostly in the form of plates or short columns, and generally occur in dense blocks, plates, or columns. Crystals are colorless and transparent, generally in colors such as white, grayish white, gray, light yellow, light red, light blue, and brownish brown. Glass luster, pearl luster on fracture surface, white stripes. The density is 4.3-4.7g/cm3, the hardness is 3-3.5. It is brittle and exhibits a yellow-green flame reaction. Insoluble in water and acids, chemically stable, non magnetic toxic, and capable of absorbing X-rays and gamma rays. Barite is mainly produced in sedimentary layered deposits and low-temperature hydrothermal veins, often coexisting with quartz, dolomite, calcite, fluorite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, etc.
